This book was not written from a distance.

It was written from sidewalks, parks, prison visiting rooms, homeless camps, churches, and conversations around dinner tables.

It was born out of real encounters with hurting people.

Over the last several years, God began opening our eyes to a world many people pass every day without truly seeing. Through these encounters, our hearts were transformed.

We learned that addiction is often rooted in pain, that anger is frequently connected to rejection, and that many people living on the streets are carrying wounds that began long before drugs ever entered their lives.

We did not set out to write a book.

We simply started saying yes.

Yes, to conversations.
Yes to interruptions.
Yes to compassion.
Yes to stepping into uncomfortable places.

And along the way, we discovered that Jesus is often found in the very places most people avoid.

Our prayer is that this book would not simply inform you, but awaken something inside of you.

Not everyone is called to the streets.
Not everyone is called to prisons.
Not everyone is called to Kensington.

But every one of us is called to love. Every one of us is called to notice the hurting.

Every one of us is called to become aware of the brokenness surrounding us every day.

If this book accomplishes anything, we pray it helps people see others through the eyes of compassion instead of judgment.

Because when we begin to truly see people, everything changes.
